CER shares its Statement on Reconciliation on National Indigenous Peoples Day

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
Today we are sharing our Statement on Reconciliation, which has been co-endorsed by the CER’s Board of Directors and the Indigenous Advisory Committee. This Statement will help ground the CER’s Reconciliation work. It sets out a series of guiding principles and values that serve as guideposts for the CER as we move forward on our Reconciliation journey.
As reflected in the Statement, we realize that we are taking this journey towards Reconciliation both as an organization and as individuals. We may be starting at different places, but we are all in it together. We will take the time necessary to engage in dialogue with our Indigenous partners, and develop (and then revise and redevelop) the right tools.
Using this Statement to guide us will help to change how we consider things and challenge old processes that could be improved. This certainly won’t be the only tool developed, but it will help guide our work forward in a better way.
We know that it is not enough to simply talk about the importance of Reconciliation, we must show that it is important through our actions, too. It’s important that we follow through on what we say with tangible actions, tools, and initiatives that demonstrate our commitment to Reconciliation, and to implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples within the CER’s mandate. We still have a long way to go and we look forward to continuing on this journey together. We will keep sharing our progress and plans, and seeking input and advice along the way.
